The longer a website has been around, the more content it is likely to have. While you can search for content in XperienCentral using Advanced Search, it can sometimes become a challenge to locate a specific article or image. Through the clever use of facets, you can quickly navigate to the desired content item most of the time. There are some cases where even this becomes difficult. Suppose you have 48 web pages on each of which the exact same form is displayed. If you perform a search on “Contact form”, the search results will contain a large number of pages. However, if you have already retrieved a page or content item one time, then you can easily navigate to it using the Search by ID widget. Then you know for sure that you have the right one because all IDs in XperienCentral are unique.
This article explains how to use the Search by ID widget.
The following shows a situation in which the Search by ID widget can help you more easily navigate to the specific content item you are looking for:
Step 1: install the widget
The Search by ID widget is not available in a standard installation of XperienCentral but you can obtain it for free by contacting our Customer Services department. Once the widget is installed, you can add it to one of the sidebars in the Workspace by clicking the plus (+) icon. The Content Repository can then be added:
Step 2: Getting started
In the widget, you can search for a page, page section and/or content item by entering its ID — “91104” entered in the “Page id” field in this example navigates to the “Contact” page:
When you click [Search], you will navigate directly to the page or content item. If you click [Preview], then you will see how the page or content item appears to visitors on the website front-end.
Sometimes you don’t know what the ID for the page or content item is. The following section explains how to retrieve IDs.
Stap 3: retrieving page and page section IDs
In order to be able to directly navigate to a specific page or page section with the widget, you need to have its internal ID. This is easy to do once you have the page/page section in front of you.
- Navigate to the page or page section in the tree structure.
- Click [Edit] in the Properties widget or use the keyboard shortcut “p”.
- Open the “Status” tab in the Properties panel.
- Note the ID (just the numeric value) next to Version ID — this is the unique ID for the version of the page or page section that you are viewing.
Stap 3: retrieving content item IDs
In order to be able to directly navigate to a specific content item, you need to have its internal ID. This is easy to do once you have the content item in front of you.
- Navigate to the content item using Advanced Search.
- Make a note of the ID in the Address field of the browser. The ID is the number appearing after “mediaitem-x_<content item type>version-“. For example, the ID of the image in the following example is “3”:
The Search by ID widget can work with a broad range of custom content types, however, if you find that it does not, please contact the GX Software Customer Services department for a solution.
